Author Albom to Speak at Hospice Event April 14th
Hospice of Central Pennsylvania will host its "Gala Celebration in Honor of The Caroly Croxton Slane Hospice Residence", a fund-raising dinner, with special guest speaker Mitch Albom, on Saturday, April 14, 2007, beginning at 5:30 pm, in Harrisburg, PA.
Mitchell David Albom is a nationally-syndicated columnist, sports radio host, and network television commentator. He wrote three best-selling books -- Tuesdays With Morrie (1997), The Five People You Meet in Heaven (2003), and For One More Day (09/06).
Previously, I reviewed his background & writings, in the context of a Pennsylvania stage production of his first book, in my posting, "Tuesdays With Morrie" Staged in Malvern, PA (February 13, 2007, on the PA Elder, Estate & Fiduciary Law Blog).
Google Book Search provides further information & an excerpt from Albom's second book, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, here.
Eddie is a wounded war veteran, an old man who has lived, in his mind, an uninspired life. His job is fixing rides at a seaside amusement park. On his 83rd birthday, a tragic accident kills him, as he tries to save a little girl from a falling cart. He awakes in the afterlife, where he learns that heaven is not a destination. It's a place where your life is explained to you by five people, some of whom you knew, others who may have been strangers. One by one, from childhood to soldier to old age, Eddie's five people revisit their connections to him on earth, illuminating the mysteries of his "meaningless" life, and revealing the haunting secret behind the eternal question: "Why was I here?"The HCP event will be held at the Sheraton Harrisburg-Hershey Hotel, located just off the Union Deposit exit of I-83, at 4650 Lindle Road, in Lower Paxton Township. A cocktail reception will begin at 5:30 pm, with dinner at 6:30 pm.
HCP will conduct both a silent & a live auction. The group "Signature" will provide entertainment & dance music. The event is "Black Tie Optional".
The event is underwritten by Andrews & Patel Associates, Central Medical Equipment, Hersha Group, Jack Gaughen Realtors, & Orrstown Bank.
Proceeds of the event will "help underwrite care at HCP's Carolyn Croxton Slane Hospice Residence".
Because HCP suggests that "seating may be limited", reservations are requested by April 2, 2007. The cost is $150 per ticket, of which $75 is tax-deductible as a charitable contribution. You may call HCP at 732-1000 for more information.
